INDICTMENT FILED AGAINST A CITIZEN OF TÜRKYIE FOR SMUGGLING MIGRANTS

- AHMET KALKANA, born in 2002 in Mersin, Republic of Türkyie, citizen of the Republic of Türkyie, who is remanded in custody.
The defendant is charged with having attempted to illegally transport migrants, citizens of the Republic of Türkyie, across the state border with the aim of obtaining financial gain out of self-interest.
According to the indictment, on 28 February of this year, upon a prior agreement with persons known to him, the defendant attempted to smuggle in rented rent-a-car vehicles 21 illegal migrants, citizens of the Republic of Türkyie, who did not meet the conditions for legal crossing of the state border, from the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina toward the territory of the Republic of Croatia and the European Union.
The defendant, together with the smuggled persons, was found and stopped by police officers of the BiH Border Police, in the town of Vukovići, municipality of Posušje, near the border with the Republic of Croatia.
The defendant is charged with having committed the criminal offence of Smuggling of persons in violation of Article 189 (1) of the Criminal Code of BiH, in conjunction with Article 26 of the same Code.
The indictment was forwarded to the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina for confirmation.
This announcement does not prejudice the outcome of the criminal proceedings and does not violate the principle of the presumption of innocence. A person shall be considered innocent of a crime until guilt has been established by a final verdict (Article 3, paragraph 1 of the CPC BiH).
