The Chief Prosecutor of the IRMCT, Serge Brammertz, also attended the Regional Conference.

The meeting parties concluded that the process of transfer of cases against inaccessible persons is a key instrument of regional cooperation and an important step in the fight against impunity for war crimes in the region. Furthermore, it was concluded that the improvement of protection and support for victims and witnesses of war crimes is an important segment of ensuring the rule of law and that prosecutor’s offices in the region should develop capacities to help victims and witnesses in order to ensure their presence and participation in war crimes trials in the countries of the region.

The issue of search for missing persons, as one of the important segments of bringing the truth and justice to the victims, was also assessed as one of the most important priorities on which prosecutor’s offices in the region should focus.

Prosecutors from the region also emphasized the importance of the support provided by the Office of the Prosecutor of the IRMCT in the Hague for overcoming difficulties in prosecution that arise in practice, as well as in all other important issues.

The host of the conference was the Office of War Crimes Prosecutor of the Republic of Serbia, and the Regional Conference of Prosecutors in Belgrade was held with the support of the OSCE Mission, the GIZ project, and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
