INDICTMENT ISSUED AGAINST AZRA BAŠIĆ (1959)
16.12.2016. 15:42Prosecutor of the Special Department for War Crimes has issued an Indictment against:
- Azra Bašić, born in 1959 in Rijeka.
This accused person is charged with acting in violation of the provisions of the Geneva Conventions relative to the protection of civilian persons in times of war, as a member of the Croatian Defence Council (HVO), in the area of Derventa.
She is charged with the commission of war crimes against the victims of Serb ethnicity who were imprisoned in the JNA Social Centre in Derventa, in 1992, in the territory of Derventa and its surroundings.
According to the allegations in the Indictment, Azra Bašić used the knife to commit an extremely cruel killing of a Serb male civilian who was lying on the floor after having been severely beaten and mistreated.
This accused person is charged with torturing and mistreating, on several occasions and in a cruel manner, a larger number of Serb prisoners who were imprisoned in the JNA Social Centre in Derventa, and inflicting severe physical and mental injuries upon them, the consequences of which they still suffer.
Azra Bašić was recently extradited to the judiciary of Bosnia and Herzegovina, from the United States of America. She has been in pre-trial detention ever since.
The Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina will prove the allegations in the Indictment by calling thirty-two (32) witnesses and submitting more than eighty (80) pieces of evidentiary material.
The Indictment has been forwarded to the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This announcement does not prejudice the outcome of the criminal proceedings and does not violate the principle of the presumption of innocence. A person shall be considered innocent of a crime until guilt has been established by a final verdict (Article 3, paragraph 1 of the CPC BiH).
