CHIEF PROSECUTOR MET WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ICMP IN BIH. UPCOMING ACTIVITIES ON LOCATING AND EXHUMING MASS GRAVES WERE DISCUSSED
12.11.2014. 13:01The focus of the meeting was on activities related to locating and finding mass graves in all parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the intensification of the search for the missing.
During the war in BIH about 31 500 people went missing. So far the remains of about 23 000 missing persons have been found and identified hence several thousands are still missing.
The meeting participants discussed a series of intensive activities that will be carried out in the future on several locations across BiH, for which there is information that the remains of victims killed in the recent war can be found there.
ICMP also voiced its strong support to the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH as an institution leading the activities and coordinating the process of exhumation and search for the missing in all parts of BiH.
The Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina considers the process of tracing and identifying the persons that went missing during the war in BIH one of its priorities because it is a process that is extremely important for the families of the missing persons who have been searching for the remains of their loved ones for more than two decades.
This process is also extremely important for the prosecution of war crimes because the information on exhumed and identified remains is important evidence in war crimes cases.
This announcement does not prejudice the outcome of the criminal proceedings and does not violate the principle of the presumption of innocence. A person shall be considered innocent of a crime until guilt has been established by a final verdict (Article 3, paragraph 1 of the CPC BiH).
