PRESS RELEASE

02.12.2013. 14:55
EXHUMATIONS WILL NOT BE SUSPENDED DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS
  • PRESS RELEASE

Regarding the statement of the spokesperson of the Missing Persons Institute of BiH - Ms. Lejla Čengić about the suspension of the exhumation at the site of Tomašica the Prosecutor's Office of BiH wants to inform the media and the public about the following:

The exhumation process is not suspended. Only the Assigned Prosecutor is authorized to suspend the exhumation and only the Prosecutor's Office of BiH is authorized to provide information about the exhumation process.

The exhumations at the localities of Tomašica and Buća Potok are not suspended. On the contrary, the exhumation efforts will be intensified. Members of the Armed Forces are in the field to help draft an operational plan for deployment of the Armed Forces machinery aiming to expedite the exhumation process following the decision of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the request of the Prosecutor's Office of BiH to use the machinery of AF BiH in order to expedite the exhumation process.

The Chief Prosecutor of the Prosecutor's Office of BiH has expressly instructed that the exhumation processes must not suffer due the weather conditions and that the exhumations must be carried out.

In addition to exhumations, many other activities related to the process of identification of missing persons and the exact determination of the identity of the victims, which are also an important element in the process of searching for missing persons, are being carried out.

The process of exhumation and identification of the missing persons is one of the priorities of the Prosecutor's Office of BiH, which was repeatedly highlighted, and this process is particularly important for the families of war crimes victims who have been searching for the remains of their loved ones for over two decades.

*Note on the principle of presumption of innocence

This announcement does not prejudice the outcome of the criminal proceedings and does not violate the principle of the presumption of innocence. A person shall be considered innocent of a crime until guilt has been established by a final verdict (Article 3, paragraph 1 of the CPC BiH).
