INDICTMENT FILED AGAINST VITOMIR POPIĆ (1961)
31.12.2012. 08:26Prosecutor of the Special Department for War Crimes of the BiH Prosecutor’s Office has filed an Indictment against Vitomir Popić, aka “Vito”, born on 08 November 1961 in Visoko, who had been residing in Gacko until the war and who currently resides in Novi Sad, Republic of Serbia, and is a citizen of the Republic of Serbia.
In his capacity of a Police Station Commander at the Gacko Public Security Station, during the armed conflict in BiH, the accused Vitomir Popić is charged with participating in the joint criminal enterprise, together with the Chief of the Gacko Public Security Station, President of the Municipality and the Crisis Staff in Gacko and a member of the Gacko Public Security Station, as well as with other responsible persons of the Gacko Territorial Defense, paramilitary formations, Command of the Gacko Battalion and other units of the Herzegovina Corps of the RS Army, in the persecution of Bosniak civilians in the territory of Gacko Municipality.
Among other things, the accused is charged with participating in imprisonment, inhumane acts, killings, deportation, forcible transfers, torture, enforced disappearances, and setting up and maintaining a detention camp system in Gacko in which Bosniak civilians were unlawfully detained. There, they were being killed and subjected to inhumane treatment by suffering injuries and torture or by being taken in an unknown direction and forcibly transferred to a detention camp set up in the former JNA barracks in Bileća.
The Indictment has been forwarded to the Court of BiH for confirmation.
This announcement does not prejudice the outcome of the criminal proceedings and does not violate the principle of the presumption of innocence. A person shall be considered innocent of a crime until guilt has been established by a final verdict (Article 3, paragraph 1 of the CPC BiH).
