APPEAL OF THE BIH PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE GRANTED; ALMAZ NEZIROVIĆ’S SENTENCE FOR WAR CRIMES IN DERVENTA INCREASED TO SIX YEARS OF IMPRISONMENT

Following the Appeal lodged by the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina due to its dissatisfaction with the first-instance Judgment, the first-instance Judgment in the case against Almaz Nezirović (born in 1959) has been revised from the original sentence of two years of imprisonment to six years of imprisonment.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina is satisfied that the Appeal of the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina, lodged in the case against the person accused of the war crimes committed against the victims of Serb ethnicity in the area of Derventa, has been granted. 

The aforementioned accused person is charged with the crimes he committed as a member of the Croatian Defence Council (HVO) and a guard in the camp in Rabić in Derventa against the victims of Serb ethnicity who were imprisoned in the camp, in the spring and summer of 1992.

The Indictment of the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina has charged him with war crimes against civilians, committed against at least thirty (30) victims, some of whom were elderly persons.

The prosecution of this accused person was carried out following a successful cooperation of the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its partner institutions in the United States of America, which resulted in locating, identifying and extraditing the accused from the United States of America, where he was residing for a number of years. On July 3rd, 2015, the accused was extradited to the judiciary of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina expresses its gratitude to the judiciary of the United States of America for the cooperation and assistance rendered in seeing to it that the war crimes are not left unpunished.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina undertakes intensive activities, in cooperation with its partner institutions in many countries, aimed at detecting, locating and extraditing war crimes suspects who have found refuge all over the world, so that they could be brought to justice and prosecuted for the war crimes they committed.
