At the conference in Ljubljana, the Chief Prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH, Milanko Kajganić, presented the work of the Special Department for War Crimes, through almost two decades of work and existence.
It was highlighted, inter alia, that the Special Department for War Crimes of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH issued indictments for serious violations of international humanitarian law against more than 1,000 individually accused persons. On the basis of these indictments, more than 320 indictees, including 6 women, were rendered more than 3,450 years of imprisonment, which clearly indicates the contribution of prosecutors and the staff of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH in the fight against impunity.
Testimonies of more than 13,000 witnesses, proving the responsibility of war crime indictees from all parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, were heard in the courtrooms.
Regional and international cooperation, intensified by this prosecutor’s office, was highlighted, as well as the fact that international arrest warrants were issued for dozens of suspects and accused persons. In the past almost 20 years, suspects have been extradited to Bosnia and Herzegovina from countries around the world, including EU, and overseas countries.
Chief Prosecutor Kajganić announced the continuation of the fight against impunity for war crimes, in cooperation with partner IRMCT OTP using instruments of regional and international cooperation.
The 8th EU day against impunity for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes were organized by the Council of Europe, the European Commission, Eurojust and the Genocide Network with the participation of the European Commissioner for Justice.
The event could also be followed via the official EUROJUST YouTube channel.
