CUSTODY PROPOSED FOR MUNIB AHMETSPAHIĆ (1990), SUSPECTED OF CRIMES OF TERRORISM AND ORGANIZING TERRORIST GROUP

Custody has been proposed due to the risk of flight, the danger that the suspect might repeat the criminal offence and the danger that, if at large, the suspect might cause public disturbance and breach of security.

CUSTODY PROPOSED FOR MUNIB AHMETSPAHIĆ (1990), SUSPECTED OF CRIMES OF TERRORISM AND ORGANIZING TERRORIST GROUP

Having questioned the suspect, the Prosecutor of the Section for Terrorism within the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina in charge of the case put forward a Motion with the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina seeking the measure of custody to be ordered against the following person:

- Munib Ahmetspahić, born on 20 June 1990 in Zenica (also known as "Ebu Davud", "Osman" and "Mugira").

The suspect is under investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina and he is suspected of having spent a longer period of time in the territory of Syria, on two occasions in 2013, where he was fighting on the side of the so-called "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL)", which was proclaimed a terrorist organization by the UN Security Council, and he was fighting in the units of radical religious groups "Jabhat Nusra" and "ISIL".

During the investigation, evidence was collected showing that the suspect had communicated and coordinated activities with other citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina staying in the territories of Syria and Iraq, and that, upon his arrival in Bosnia and Herzegovina, he organized and assisted the departure of another BiH citizen to that area.

Also, the suspect Munib Ahmetspahić is a person who can be brought in connection with Mevlid Jašarević, who was sentenced for the attack on the US Embassy, in October 2011.

In the course of conducting investigative operations in this case, significant international cooperation has been established with partner institutions of the United States of America. 

The suspect Ahmetspahić is charged with the commission of the criminal offence of Organizing a Terrorist Group, as referred to in Article 202d of the Criminal Code of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the criminal offence of Terrorism, as referred to in Article 201 of the same Code.  

The motion for custody has been forwarded to the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
