On April 1, 2014 an exhumation process commenced at the location of Jelač in the area of Foča municipality under the supervision of the Prosecutor's Office of BiH. Human bone fragments for which it cannot, at this point, be confirmed whether they belong to one or several different persons were unearthed.
Following the recovery the remains shall be transported to Goražde for forensic and criminal investigation processing i.e. collection of DNA samples in order to determine the identity of the victim(s) through DNA analysis.
The exhumation process at this location will continue during the next few days as it is an area with an extremely inaccessible terrain and there are indications that several bodies are located there.
The exhumation process was supervised by a Legal Officer of the Special Department for War Crimes within the Prosecutor's Office of BiH. The process of locating and exhuming the missing was attended by representatives of the BiH Institute for Missing Persons, a doctor specializing in forensic medicine and Police Officers of Foča PSC.
