The Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina has issued an indictment against Petar (son of Bonifacije) Barbarić, born in 1936 in Ljubuški, a citizen of both Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Croatia.
He is charged with delivering a speech on 2 November 2025, near an illegally erected monument at the local cemetery in Čapljina, with the intention of glorifying Slobodan Praljak (who is buried in Zagreb). By final judgment of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) number IT-04-74-A dated 29 November 2017, Praljak had been convicted for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The speech was broadcast by various electronic media outlets and internet portals, garnering a large number of views, as well as reactions from the public and citizens. The accused is charged with glorifying an individual convicted by final ICTY judgments of crimes against humanity and war crimes, whereby he committed the criminal offense of Provoking Ethnic, Racial and Religious Hatred, Conflicts and Intolerance under Article 145a, Paragraph 6 of the Criminal Code of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina has confirmed the indictment.
The investigation into the case will continue with the aim of identifying the persons responsible for the illegal erection of the monument.
